SIGH!

This sweet little film was another of my Doorpost Film Project finds. It’s a joy, really. A story about a man who is sentimentally challenged and desperate for romance. He falls in love, she knows his dance, but it lasts the length of a sigh. The film is set to Fats Waller’s lovely song “Sigh.”

Time: 6:53

The Doorpost Film Project is an international online short film competition and filmmakers’ community. I was lucky enough to be included on their judges’ panel this year.

Yesterday Doorpost announced the TOP TEN films in their 2009 competition. I’m pleased to say that one of the short films FunnyFixx featured this week was included in the elite list of finalists: JOHN GRAY. We posted John Gray on May 13 and Dan Baker, one of the film’s directors, left comments for you to read. If you haven’t seen John Gray, it’s an extraordinary film. Here’s the link: http://funnyfixx.com/blog/2009/05/13/john-gray/

And here is the complete list of the 2009 TOP TEN finalist short films:

Liv, Escape, The Messenger, John Gray, La Pluma, The Embalmer, Bountiful Bounty,
Timing, Biggest Weakness and Mojave Philosophy. Congratulations to everyone that worked on these great films!

And for your viewing pleasure, above we’re featuring another of the Top Ten films. It’s called TIMING. It’s a story about how it takes forgiveness for a husband and wife clown duo to perfect their act. It was directed by John DesRoches.

JOHN GRAY

Time: 6:59

John Gray lives with his beautiful wife Susie Slumber, who unfortunately does not share his interest in plain oatmeal or overcast days. Wanting more, Susie leaves. Before John can figure out what to do, he is visited by the mischievous Rem. John must learn to look beyond his gray world fast before all is lost.

Written & Directed by Dan Baker and Chris Pollock. Starring Ed Porter, Tzvetana Denkova, Alissa Diggs and Jim Esposito. Produced by Paul Skidmore.

FUNNYFIXX NOTE: This gorgeous short film is in competition at The Doorpost Film Project (I’m one of the judges for 2009). Even though it’s not really a comedy, I wanted to share it with our FunnyFixx fans because it’s so quirky and delightful. Enjoy.

INSPIRACIJA (INSPIRATION)

In this short film by Federico Verardi an uninspired painter almost kills his muse as he is desperately trying to meet his show’s deadline.

FUNNYFIXX NOTE: This is another jewel of a short film I found while judging the Doorpost Film Project competition last month. The filmmaker’s theme was forgiveness and he wanted to show that the journey to forgiveness can help enable you to see the good and bad in yourself.

IMMOBILE

Time: 6:22

Yuri has lost the keys to his fathers car, he affectionatly calls ‘Natasha’ and only has 20 minutes to get the car to the motorshow, where it’s the star attraction. He now must enlist the help of strangers to help him on his journey. It’s a small comedic film about the joy of people coming together to help a fellow man in need.

This is a short film by Aaron McCann of Perth, Western Australia which is competing in The Door Post short film competition.

FUNNYFIXX NOTE: Making a short film looks easy. It’s not. There are so many elements that must go right, starting with the script. This is a cool story and a great example of the audience rooting for the protagonist to achieve his goal. Oh, yeah, and this little film has a big surprise ending!

EASTER BUNNY SUPERHERO, Part 2

SHORT FILMS 1 Comment »

Time: 4:12

The Easter Bunny, weary of being taken for granted and getting no respect, applies for Super Hero Class A. But when the Super Hero Commission learns of Bunny’s not so perfect past, his application for super hero status is in jeopardy. The film’s story is that of an underdog, or under-bunny, in this case.

Easter Bunny Superhero is a 7-minute short film produced by Team Psycho Film Binge
for Jacksonville, Florida’s 2007 48 Hour Film Project. It won 7 awards in the competition: Best of Jacksonville (top award), Audience Award (Group A), Best Acting (Ensemble), Best Cinematography (Kirby Hamilton), Best Costume (Suzy Freeman),
Best Screenplay (Sharon Y. Cobb) and Best Use of Character.

The film also won a bronze 2008 Telly Award and will be shown in A World of Shorts presented by CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival and the National Film Board of Canada on April 15, 2009.

The short was directed by Dan Solomon and produced by Danny Quitter, Psycho Film Binge team leader. For a full list of credits, click here: http://funnyfixx.com/blog/cast-and-credits-short-films/

FUNNYFIXX NOTE: If your town hosts a 48 Hour Film Project competition and you haven’t been on a team…to write, shoot, direct, act, produce, crew, edit, compose music, do makeup, create costumes or sets or anything to get the short film made in 48 hours…do yourself a gigantic favor and jump in!! It’s a total adrenaline rush to be on a team of 5 or 50 frantically working toward one common goal—make a 7-minute film in 2 days.

I was lucky enough to get drafted by a long-time friend, Danny Quitter, to write a script for their team during the first year of Jacksonville, Florida’s plunge into the weekend filmmaking madness. The experience proved I didn’t need to wait for Hollywood to buy my scripts, I…with help of a few friends…could make films.

Easter Bunny Superhero was the launching pad for all the short films, webisodes and videos I’ve made since then, almost 90 total now…with the help of a lot of friends. Three cheers for our side!

Sometimes, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one. Especially when you’re hungry. Short animated film directed by Janet Perlman. To see more inspiring films about responsibility go to: http://www.responsibilityproject.com/

Here’s a note from the website’s sponsor Liberty Mutual: As an insurance company, we like responsible people. Because people who believe in doing the right thing don’t just make better people, they make better customers. But the idea of responsibility can be difficult to define. What does it mean? Why is it important? These aren’t questions that can be easily addressed or agreed upon. There are a lot of differing opinions and beliefs involved. And while we may never uncover any definitive answers, we believe the questions are still worth asking.

FUNNYFIXX NOTE: The best short films inspire us and convey messages of social responsibility. This short does both.
