It cost an estimated $200 million to produce, market and distribute worldwide. Producers projected at least a $30 million opening weekend, but Land of the Lost barely brought in $19.5 million, losing out to the buddies comedy The Hangover and Pixar’s Up. Up ended up #1 this last weekend with $44.2 million box office receipts and a total of $137.3 million since it opened. The Hangover, an R-rated raunch fest, came in at #2 with $43.3 million.
Land of the Lost looks cool and funny but before the premiere, buzz was that it was “family unfriendly” with toilet humor even though it was rated PG-13. Check out the trailer above and here’s the brief storyline below.
Will Ferrell stars as has-been scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, sucked into one and spat back through time. Way back. Now, Marshall has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from beyond our world – a place of spectacular sights and super-scaled comedy known as the Land of the Lost.
